Please join us for this virtual event focusing on research related to Military and Veteran health and well-being and Military Sexual Trauma. This event will focus on Canadian-based and international research being led by students and early career researchers to better understand military sexual misconduct and military sexual trauma as well as important considerations on how we learn about this important issue.

This symposium will be moderated by Dr. Linna Tam-Seto, who is an Assistant Professor at McMaster University in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences. It will be of interest to Canadian Armed Forces members and Veterans and their supporters (e.g., friends, family, loved ones), academics, researchers, organizational leadership, professional organizations, and policy makers — so please share this page widely.

Since 2020, she has been involved in a participatory action research project on the Dutch armed forces with the aim of strengthening the psychological safety of military personnel and fostering a just and equitable culture in the army. Her research interests centre on military culture, in which issues of hierarchy, masculinity, camaraderie and pride play a prominent role. She is also interested in the innovation capacity of the military in their workplace. Bethany Easterbrook, MSc (Clinical Psychology PhD Candidate @Psychology, Neuroscience, and Behaviour, McMaster University) Bethany Easterbrook (she/her) is a Clinical Psychology PhD Candidate from McMaster University, supervised by Dr. Margaret McKinnon. She previously obtained an undergraduate degree in Kinesiology from University of Toronto, and a Master’s degree in Health Research Methodology from McMaster University. She has previous research experience in a variety of settings including pediatric surgery, manual therapy, disability policy, schizophrenia, and military mental health. Bethany’s current research focuses on moral injury and post-traumatic stress in military and veteran populations. Bibi Imre-Millei (Research Associate @Lund University) Bibi (she/her) is the project coordinator for the CIDP’s Gender Lab since 2019, managing the team on projects related to gender and the military. In 2021, Bibi completed an MA in Sociology at Queen’s University researching theoretical and methodological approaches to swarm drones in the Media, Information, and Surveillance Stream. In 2020 she graduated from an MA in political studies with a thesis on biometrics in Iraq and Afghanistan also from Queen’s. Bibi is also involved in the Emerging Leaders in Canadian Security Network and is part of the graduate student committee for the Research Network on Women, Peace, and Security at McGill University. Dr. Henry Bowen (Senior Research Officer @Military and Emergency Services Health Australia) Dr. Henry Bowen (they/them) is the Senior Research Officer at Military and Emergency Services Health Australia, a charity which sits under the Hospital Research Foundation Group. Dr. Bowen works in the areas of grief, bereavement, LGBTQIA+ mental health, human-animal interactions, and adjunct treatments which have translational outcomes and implications for the sustained wellbeing of Military and Emergency Services personnel and their families.
